Almost everything you buy while pregnant is for the baby, and then the baby arrives and you discover the part nobody prepared you for. Postpartum care covers the first six weeks of your own recovery, and it is the shopping most people do too late.
The First Fortnight
Perineal recovery is the immediate job after a vaginal birth, and a small number of things make a real difference. A peri bottle for rinsing rather than wiping, cooling pads or instant ice packs for the first few days, and healing foam or spray for the soreness in between.
Disposable underwear belongs in the same list. High-waisted, generously sized and designed to be thrown away, it saves your own clothes during the heaviest bleeding and removes one more thing to think about. Buy more than you expect to need, because nobody has ever regretted having too much of it.
Recovering From a Caesarean
A caesarean is major abdominal surgery and the recovery runs longer, usually three to five days in hospital and six weeks before you are cleared to lift much or drive. What helps is anything that takes pressure off the incision while you move, stand and cough.
Support bands and recovery underwear sit high above the scar and give your abdomen something to hold onto, which makes getting out of bed considerably less daunting. Silicone scar strips come later, once healing is well underway, and are usually started on your care team's advice rather than immediately.
Breast Care in the Early Weeks
Milk coming in around day three catches most people off guard. Hot and cold packs handle the engorgement, working warm before a feed to help things move and cold afterwards to settle the swelling, and they get used far more often than you would guess.
Nipple soreness is the other common early problem, and silver nursing cups and balms both have a place depending on what you find works. Collectors catch the milk that leaks on the other side during a feed, which is worth saving rather than losing into a breast pad.
Postpartum Brands We Stock
Frida Mom is the name most parents recognise for recovery kits, having built the category around being blunt about what actually happens after birth.Partum Panties is the Australian equivalent, covering peri bottles, foams and support bands.
On the clinical side, SRC Health makes the silicone scar care and silver nursing cups,Belly Bandit covers abdominal wraps, andLactivate andNew Beginnings handle breast care. These are just some of the brands we carry.
Packing It Before You Need It
Most of this belongs in your hospital bag rather than on a shelf at home, because the first days are when you need it, and the last thing you will want is a shopping trip. Browse the fullfor mum range, or gather it alongside these:
We post Australia-wide, and if you would rather ask than guess, our team has been through it atAlexandria andMiranda.
