Why This Beats a Sheet Plus a Protector
The usual arrangement is a mattress protector with a fitted sheet over the top. It works, but it is two layers to wash, two layers to wrestle back on, and a bad night means remaking both of them in the dark with a crying baby in the other room.
Combining them puts the barrier inside the sheet. Cotton sits against your baby's skin and the waterproof backing stops anything reaching the mattress, so one change covers it. Keep two or three in the cupboard and the middle of the night stops being a project.
The other thing it buys you is the life of the mattress. A cot mattress is the piece you cannot put through a machine, and reflux, teething and the first year of nappies all point at it, so a barrier that is actually on the bed every night rather than folded in a drawer is worth having.
Wash them the way you would any fitted sheet, warm rather than hot, and leave them out of the dryer. Heat is what shortens the life of a waterproof backing, and a sheet washed gently will still be sealed by the time a second baby needs it.
