Getting the Fit Right

Fit is the thing worth taking seriously, and it's simpler than it sounds. A bassinet fitted sheet should sit taut across the mattress with the corners fully engaged and no loose fabric anywhere, which keeps the sleep surface flat and firm the way safe sleep guidance recommends. The complication is that bassinets vary far more than cots do, so a sheet made for one model may sit loose on another. 

Check your mattress measurements against the sheet dimensions before ordering, and if you're between sizes, go with the sheet made for your bassinet rather than a close approximation. Once it's on, run a hand around the edges. It should feel smooth and secure, and if it lifts at a corner, it isn't the right one.

Cotton, Jersey and Waterproof Options

Woven cotton is the classic choice, breathable and crisp, and it holds its shape wash after wash. Jersey cotton has a little stretch, which makes it easier to pull over an awkward mattress and gives a softer feel against new skin. Waterproof-backed sheets are the ones parents come back for, because they combine a cotton top layer with a hidden barrier underneath, so a leak stops at the sheet instead of soaking into the mattress. 

In an Australian summer, breathability matters, so look for natural fibres against your baby and a barrier layer that still allows some airflow. Many families run a mix, keeping waterproof sheets for the nights that need them and plain cotton for everything else.

How Many You'll Actually Need

Three is the number most parents settle on. One on the bassinet, one clean and folded in the drawer, and one in the wash. Two feels like enough right up until the night it isn't, and you're waiting on a dryer at two in the morning. A mattress protector underneath adds another layer of insurance and saves the mattress itself, which is worth more than the protector costs.
