A canopy rod fixes to the cot frame itself and arcs over the top, holding the fabric clear of the mattress, and these are usually made for a specific cot so the fittings line up properly. A net and stand works independently, with a freestanding pole beside the cot that supports the net over it, which suits any cot and moves easily if you rearrange the room. 

Rods give the cleaner look since there's no separate pole in the corner. Stands give you flexibility and travel between a cot and a bassinet. Either way, check the fabric drop, since a canopy that's too short looks like an afterthought and one that's too long ends up pooling on the floor.

Hanging a Canopy Safely

Worth taking a minute over, and then you can stop thinking about it. Loose fabric should never hang within reach of your baby or fall inside the cot, so drape it so the sides stay well clear of the mattress and gather any excess up and away rather than letting it hang down. Fit the rod or stand exactly as the instructions describe and give it a firm tug once it's up. 

Keep the cot itself free of soft items, since safe sleep guidance is consistent that the sleep surface stays flat, firm and clear, and a canopy sits above and around the cot rather than in it. As your baby starts pulling to stand, check again that nothing has come within grabbing distance.
