Compact & Small Cots

Not every family gets a spare room. Plenty of babies start out in a corner of the main bedroom, in a study that still has a desk in it, or in a room shared with an older sibling. A compact cot is built for exactly that, giving your baby a proper sleep space without taking the whole room to do it.

Not every family gets a spare room. Plenty of babies start out in a corner of the main bedroom, in a study that still has a desk in it, or in a room shared with an older sibling. A compact cot is built for exactly that, giving your baby a proper sleep space without taking the whole room to do it.

When a Small Cot Is the Right Call

Apartments and townhouses are the obvious case, but they are not the only one. Room sharing is common in the first six to twelve months, and a full-size cot beside a queen bed leaves very little floor to walk on at three in the morning. Older terraces have bedrooms with awkward proportions and doorways that a standard cot will not clear.

Families expecting a second baby often need two sleep spaces in a room built for one. And if you are renting, a smaller cot is far easier to move between houses. The trade is straightforward. You give up some mattress length, which means the cot may serve for a shorter stretch, in exchange for a room you can move around in now.

Measuring Before You Buy

Measure the room, then measure the path to it. A space saver cot that fits the corner is no use if it cannot get up the stairs assembled, so check whether it builds in the room or arrives whole. Allow clearance on the side you will lift from, because reaching over a rail with a sleeping baby needs more space than it looks.

Think about what else has to share the room, since a dresser doubling as a change table needs its drawers to open fully. Mattress sizing matters as well, and cots in this range often take a non-standard size, so buy the mattress made for the cot rather than assuming a standard one will fit. A snug fit with no gaps at the sides is the thing to check on arrival.

Getting More Years From a Mini Cot

The obvious worry with a mini cot is how soon you replace it. Convertible designs answer that by dropping a side or extending to become a toddler bed, which stretches the same footprint across several years rather than a single stage. Adjustable mattress bases help too, sitting high while you are lifting a newborn in and out, then dropping as your child learns to pull up.

Some models fold for storage between children, which is worth considering if you are planning a second and have nowhere to keep a cot in the meantime. It is also worth asking whether the range includes a matching dresser or shelving, since coordinated pieces in a small room read as deliberate rather than crowded.

The Brands You’ll Find

Leander is the Danish name behind the curved cots that convert through several stages, built for rooms where the furniture has to look considered.Boori works in solid timber with compact cot beds designed to take a child well past the cot years.

Babyhood is an Australian brand with a long history of building for local homes and local mattress sizes.BabyRest covers the folding and space-conscious end, which suits families short on permanent storage. These are just some of the brands we carry.

Finishing the Sleep Space

A cot on its own is half the job. The mattress has to fit properly, the bedding has to suit the season, and in a small room the storage has to work harder than usual. Browse our full range of nursery, or start with the categories most parents pair with a compact cot:

  • Cots
  • Mattresses
  • Bassinets & Cradles
  • Co Sleepers
  • Cot Accessories
  • Bedding
  • Nursery Bundles
  • Bookcases & Toyboxes

Every order is delivered Australia-wide, and you are welcome to see the cots set up in person at ourAlexandria orMiranda stores.

FAQs

A small or compact cot is ideal for tight nurseries or apartments. Look for a design with a slim footprint, storage options underneath, and adjustable mattress heights to make the most of the space.
Mini cots are usually shorter in length but similar in width to a standard cot, while compact cots are designed to be narrower and sometimes foldable. Both save space but check dimensions to suit your room and lifestyle.
Small cots generally range from 120–130 cm in length and 60–70 cm in width. Exact sizes vary, so measure your room and doorways before purchasing.
Yes, as long as they meet Australian safety standards, have a firm mattress, and no loose bedding or gaps that could pose a hazard.
Absolutely. Mini cribs provide a cozy, contained space that can help newborns feel secure while sleeping safely.
Typically, babies can use mini cribs until they start to sit or roll independently, usually around 6–12 months, depending on the model and weight limit.
