Jess' Journal | Back Support during Pregnancy

By Jess P, Baby Village on 21 January 2018

The human body is an incredible thing, but the human body going through a pregnancy is nothing short of remarkable! On a daily basis, I am fascinated by what is happening to my body, and as anyone who has been pregnant knows, every pregnancy experience is unique.

I recently had coffee with a girlfriend who is 14-weeks pregnant, she’s had every possible symptom a pregnancy can throw at you, from morning sickness to nose bleeds, and she’s still got 2 trimesters to go! I on the other hand have been super lucky, I had some mild nausea in my first trimester, but not what I’d classify as morning sickness, and I’ve had some tiredness here and there, but I’ve really gotten off quite lightly, with the exception of a very sore lower back and some sciatic pain, especially after a long day of standing and working in the store.

I recall assisting a customer before I even fell pregnant who was in her second trimester, she was a Chef and was on her feet all day; generally at a slightly bent angle over the kitchen bench. Of the many options available, I recommended she try on the Mamaway Maternity Support Belt and you could see on her face the comfort she felt immediately. The individual channels on the elastic part of the belt follow the contours of your body making for a really comfortable fit, plus with the open-ended length you can adjust the tightness and therefore level of support you require. So, when I started to feel that my lower back was taking the load, I put one on myself and it’s been great!

Outside of work, I’m quite an active person and wanted something lightweight and discreet to wear under my active-wear as a back and belly support during exercise. So early on, I also got myself a New Beginnings Back Support Tube and I’ve been using this ever since. I’ve been seeing a PT almost every Monday since about the 16-week mark and found what really helped my lower back was to strengthen it. My friend who’s also a PT though said once a week is not enough, and while I agree, sadly the practicalities of life and running a business prevent me from doing much more. I try to get in a session at home myself once a week, and while I love yoga and Pilates, and know the benefits of these both during and post pregnancy, I just haven’t had time! (The age-old excuse!)

I have also invested in a few maternity-specific active-wear pieces, including a pair of The Charlie tights from The Ten Active. These have been great to give me that little bit of extra support for my long walks on the weekend with Hubby & the dog, without having to add layers. Plus, they look stylish so when we break for (second) breakfast, I still look good!

Oh, and one last tip, as your belly starts to swell and you want to keep wearing your regular jeans, the Fertile Mind Belly Belt is a must have! I got one early on and it’s been a life-saver! I actually keep it in my make-up purse, as sometimes I start off the day feeling great, and then feel bigger as the day goes on (especially after lunch) – I whip this out and button it into place for instant relief!
