Safe Co-Sleeping with Bednest

By Gillian Rose, Danish by Design on 22 October 2018

One of the three key questions you'll ask yourself when preparing for Bub's arrival is "where will my baby sleep"? You will have well-meaning family and friends who suggest you sleep Bub in their own cot in a separate room from day one, and you'll have others who swear by a Moses basket in your room to start with. According to Red Nose (formerly SIDS and Kids) the ideal place for a baby to sleep is on their own sleep surface, in a safe cot, with safe bedding, next to the parents’ bed.

Like many families, you may not have room for a full-size cot in your bedroom, or you may not feel comfortable with the stability of a Moses basket, especially if you have a toddler or pets (think curious dog), so the perfect solution may be a bedside bassinet like the Bednest. The Bednest is designed to enhance your bond as a mother with your newborn baby, whilst providing you each with your own safe sleeping space.

Developed by midwives in the UK, the Bednest stand is fully height adjustable and can be strapped to either a frame or ensemble, the ends can also be independently adjusted to provide an angled sleep surface to soothe babies who may suffer from severe reflux.

The bassinet is designed with mesh sides, both for easy visibility of Bub, and also have the ability to be pulled down, acting like a bridge between you and Bub, making night-time feeds easier, especially if you’ve had a caesarean.

Some other benefits of the Bednest:

  • You may already have a child who has not yet outgrown their cot in another room, and the 6-months use you’ll get out of a Bednest is worthwhile.
  • It is portable, so while you can leave the stand strapped to your bed, you can lift the bassinet off and take it to another room in the house for daytime naps.
  • It is fantastically easy to pack down and take with you. With no tools required, you'll have the whole unit flat and ready to go in a matter of minutes! This is also great for long-term storage between siblings.
(A carry bag is available as an optional extra.)

Please note: The Bednest received an update due to a safety concern in 2016 ensuring both sides were full panels and could no longer fold in half. For this reason we encourage the purchase of a new Bednest and not a pre-loved one.
