Jess' Journal | We're expecting!!

By Jess P, Baby Village on 18 August 2018

We’re expecting! Yay!! Baby P is due in February and the time is flying! We have just hit the third trimester and I’ve realised I need to get a wriggle on and start getting ready for Bub’s arrival! As first-time parents Hubby and I have decided not to find out Bub’s gender so will be setting up a neutral nursery that we can personalise once our little one arrives!

As the Owner of a Baby store I’m in quite a unique position; I not only have access to the latest and greatest baby gear, I also have in-depth knowledge about what each product does and who it’s best suited to. There is so much information available out there and it can often be hard to cut through the noise and make a decision. When I talk to expecting Mums & Dads in store, more often than not, a family member or friend has recommended “must have” items which can often lead to anxiousness as they don’t want to make the wrong decision, or come home with something other than what they’ve been told. My 2-cents is that your situation is unique and the best thing to do is find the most suitable product for you, remember there is no “best”!

There’s also no “right time” to start your baby-buying journey, but it’s a good idea to start your research early on and start locking things in from about 6-months; as I’ve come to realise I’m less mobile than I was even 4-weeks ago and I’ve still got furniture to assemble and mobiles to hang!

At Baby Village, we have a really handy checklist that I recommend to all my customers, it’s set out in chronological order so parents aren’t overwhelmed from the start with all the things they’ll eventually need. The 3 key items we recommend starting with are a) the car seat – so you can get bub safely home from the hospital, b) somewhere for bub to sleep, and c) probably the most exciting (and expensive) decision you’ll make in preparation for Bub’s arrival is the Pram!

We also have a really great Baby Registry that you can setup for friends and family to purchase your smaller items from, or just to use as a checklist for yourself as you think of things you want and need. I have used this myself and it’s a great visual reference for baby-brain – I’ve logged back in a few times and seen things I didn’t realise I’d even put on there!

As we draw closer to our due date and my bump is starting to become more obvious (I no longer look like I just had a big lunch!), I constantly hear “you’re so lucky, you can have your choice of practically anything!” And, they’re right, so what have I chosen? And (what I’m sure you’d also like to know is) why… so stay tuned as we count down and I'll keep you posted!

Jess x
